Prison warden pushes back on Tory Lanez's $100 million suit over his stabbing behind bars
The California prison warden sued by Tory Lanez denies he did anything to cause the rapper's stabbing and says Lanez's rights were never violated.

The warden at the California prison where Tory Lanez is serving his sentence is fighting the rapper's $100 million lawsuit over the attack that nearly killed him.
The warden's response
Thomas Valdez runs the California Correctional Institution. In a new court filing he denies that anything he did led to Lanez getting hurt. He also dismisses the claim that the rapper's civil rights were violated.
Valdez puts the blame elsewhere. His filing points to Lanez himself and to the prison guards.
What both sides agree on
The warden does not dispute the basic facts of the attack. He acknowledges that another inmate, Santino Casio, stabbed Lanez with a homemade weapon while the two men were held in the same facility.
Lanez argues the two should never have shared a unit. He points to what he calls Casio's violent history.
The lawsuit
Lanez is suing the California Department of Corrections along with Valdez and 50 correctional officers at the prison. He wants roughly $100 million in damages.
He says staff were not present when they should have been. He also accuses the prison of a deliberate failure to deal with violence between inmates.
Valdez maintains that he cannot be held legally responsible for the attack.
The attack
Lanez was taken to a hospital after he was stabbed 14 times. Both of his lungs collapsed.
