The pressure on Michael Carrick just got heavier. Chelsea beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. United are now without a win in nine games in all competitions.

United held their own in a lively first half. Matheus Cunha and Estêvão both had goals ruled out for offside before the break. Carrick said his side "could, should, have scored one or two, maybe three even."

It all fell apart after halftime. Five minutes in, Morgan Rogers dribbled straight through the United defense and dinked a finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

A red card swings it

Lisandro Martínez was sent off three and a half minutes after his first yellow card. The video review caught his elbow hitting Wesley Fofana as a Chelsea corner came in. Cole Palmer then doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Lammens got both hands on it, but the ball squirmed in off the post.

Estêvão had a late third goal chalked off for offside. In injury time Chelsea keeper Mike Penders tipped a powerful Bryan Mbeumo shot onto the bar to keep his clean sheet.

Carrick shrugs off the drop talk

United have only seven points from nine league games and sat just one point above the bottom three at the final whistle. Asked if being in the relegation zone would carry a stigma, Carrick said, "Not for me, no. We've got to keep moving forward and winning games, simple as that."

"The second half got away from us, which is something we've got to deal with," he said. "The two halves of football couldn't probably be more further apart in some ways."

Many expected Carrick to be gone after last week's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth. Captain Bruno Fernandes returned to the lineup after he was dropped for criticizing Carrick's tactics following a heavy loss at Como.

Chelsea go young

Xabi Alonso's Chelsea had lost two straight coming in. Their starting lineup averaged 23 years and 89 days, the youngest in a Premier League match since May 2025.

United have gone 10 straight games without a win only twice in their history, in 1961-62 and 1977-78. They host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday before league games against Aston Villa and Liverpool.
