Chelsea won at Everton on Saturday but the result was overshadowed by a scary moment for its goalkeeper.

Pedro Neto scored early in the second half and again late in stoppage time as Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. It was Everton's first Premier League loss of the season.

Martinez carried off

Midway through the second half Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez cleared a free kick and clashed heads with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Both players went down. Branthwaite got back to his feet but Martinez stayed down as medical staff worked on him for about 10 minutes.

The Argentine was strapped in and carried off on a stretcher to warm applause. He appeared to be conscious and was reported to be heading to the hospital. There was no immediate update on his condition.

Mike Penders, 21, replaced him and became the youngest goalkeeper to play for Chelsea in the Premier League. The match had 11 minutes of stoppage time.

Neto does the damage

The first half was tense rather than pretty. Referee Paul Tierney showed five yellow cards before the break and Moises Caicedo hit the woodwork with a volley off a corner for Chelsea. Everton striker Thierno Barry headed an open chance straight at Martinez.

Chelsea broke through less than a minute after halftime when Neto finished a move down the left with a low shot that squeezed past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. In stoppage time a Jordan Henderson free kick bounced off the wall to Neto, who faked a shot before guiding the ball into the far corner. It was the first two-goal game of his Premier League career in his 187th appearance.

Penders and Martinez combined for Chelsea's first Premier League clean sheet in 23 matches. It was only Chelsea's second win in its last 10 league visits to Everton.

Where it leaves them

Both teams started the day with 10 points from six games. The win lifts Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso's side to 13 points after last week's 5-1 rout of Bournemouth. David Moyes' Everton stay on 10.
