Hustles

Steve Griggs stopped doing every landscaping job himself

Steve Griggs grew up doing the labor on his dad's landscaping jobs. He tells Upflip the business grew when he sold design and let crews do the work.

Steve Griggs did not dream of landscaping. As a kid he did the labor while his dad ran the business side. That split stayed with him.

After college he opened his own company and did every job himself. The days were long and the only growth path he could see was working harder than the next crew.

The change he describes is a decision to sell design, relationships and project management instead of his own hours with a shovel. Better clients followed. He puts the design-led company at about $3.5 million a year.

Selling the plan, not the sweat

The Upflip episode is about that handoff: crews do the install and he stays on the design and the client. He is blunt that the old way was burning him out.

The revenue figure is his account. The business is landscaping he no longer tries to perform alone.
