Nick Friedman and his friend Omar started with a summer job and an old cargo van. The company that came out of it is College Hunks Hauling Junk.

He describes answering calls on personal phones, then a call center, software and a franchise system. The name and the HUNKS shorthand (Honest, Uniformed, Nice, Knowledgeable Service) were part of standing out in a business people treat as interchangeable.

He says the operation now does on the order of $25 million a month across the network. That figure is his account of a company that began as extra cash in college.

A van and a name

On Upflip he walks through the jump from two friends in a van to a brand other people open. The episode spends time on the unglamorous systems, not only the trucks.

The monthly figure is his. The start was a summer and a cargo van.
