Liverpool are into the Carabao Cup quarterfinals. The Reds drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday and then won the penalty shootout 6-5.

Defender Joe Gomez scored the deciding kick. Gomez has never scored a goal in 280 games for Liverpool. He picked a big moment to find the net from the spot.

Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was the other hero. He saved from Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha before Wesley Fofana blazed his kick over the bar to end it.

Two penalties in three minutes

Both goals came from the spot late in the first half. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo. Cody Gakpo answered three minutes later after Fofana was called for a handball.

Liverpool almost won it sooner. Kostas Tsimikas had the chance to finish the shootout after Valentín Barco hit the post for Chelsea. He missed and the shootout went to sudden death.

Alexis Mac Allister, Alexander Isak, Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola and Gomez all scored for Liverpool. Pedro Neto, Rogers, Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson and Levi Colwill converted for Chelsea.

Rotated lineups

Liverpool made seven changes and Chelsea made four. Chelsea were without the suspended Cole Palmer. João Pedro missed out with a thigh injury. It was Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso's third defeat at Anfield as a manager.

The win was Liverpool's fifth in a row. Arsenal visit Anfield this weekend while Chelsea host Manchester United.

A familiar foe next

The quarterfinal draw sent Liverpool to Bournemouth, the club Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola used to coach. "I was talking before the draw and said, 'The only team that I don't want is Bournemouth,'" Iraola said.

The other ties are Fleetwood against the winner of Everton and Newcastle, Manchester City against Bradford City and Crystal Palace against Sunderland. The quarterfinals will be played the week of Dec. 14. Liverpool are record 10-time winners of the competition.
