Josh Jacobs says his viral touchdown celebration was a nod to a gospel song, not his arrest
Packers running back Josh Jacobs said his hands-behind-the-back celebration against Carolina honored the gospel song "Break Every Chain."

Josh Jacobs wants everyone to know what his touchdown celebration really meant. The Green Bay Packers running back said the pose that went viral during Thursday night's 27-19 win over the Carolina Panthers was a tribute to the gospel song "Break Every Chain."
After his first touchdown of the night, the broadcast showed Jacobs in the end zone with his hands behind his back. Clips spread quickly online. Many viewers linked the pose to his arrest earlier this year, when he was charged with misdemeanor battery and destruction of property after an incident with a woman at his home near Green Bay.
Jacobs was unhappy with that reading after the game. "They didn't even get the whole celebration," he said. He added that the clip showed only one second of it.
A plan made with a teammate
Jacobs said he and receiver Savion Williams planned two celebrations for his return. The first, last week, was to thank God. The second was always going to be "Break Every Chain."
"It's just a correlation, but like I said, the media [is] going to run with it," Jacobs said. "They're going to make it something that it wasn't, but it is what it is." He noted that several teammates made the same gesture with him.
"I didn't think it was going to be a thing that can be perceived a certain type of way," he said. He added that people will see things how they want to see them these days.
Where his case stands
Jacobs pleaded no contest to the charges in September. He was convicted of battery and received a deferred judgment agreement on the destruction of property charge. He spent the first six games of the season on the commissioner exempt list. The NFL removed him from that list in Week 7 but has not closed its review under the personal conduct policy.
A tough night on the ground
Thursday was his first game at Lambeau Field this season. He said the crowd gave him a good reception. "It was good to be out there, Thursday night, electric, stadium packed," he said.
Jacobs still found the end zone twice. He scored on a 1-yard run and a 4-yard catch. He ran 21 times for just 39 yards against the league's worst run defense and caught six passes for 13 yards. Green Bay improved to 5-3.
