James Talarico pops up on SNL days after his Texas Senate upset
Texas Senator-elect James Talarico played himself in the post-midterm SNL cold open alongside James Austin Johnson as Trump and joked about his $5 texts.

James Talarico's big week just got a comedy encore.
Days after the Democrat pulled off a win in the Texas Senate race the former middle school teacher turned up on "Saturday Night Live" as himself. He joined the show's cold open — a sketch built around the Republican losses in Tuesday's midterm elections.
James Austin Johnson opened the bit in character as President Trump. Speaking to the nation in character he said he hoped voters would "enjoy" their picks — then name-checked Georgia's Jon Ossoff plus Michigan's Abdul El-Sayed before landing on "of course, down in Texas, Talafreako" — the nickname the real president uses for him.
A cheer from the crowd
That was Talarico's cue. He walked out to loud applause from the studio audience and went straight for a self-own about his campaign — the daily texts he sent Americans throughout the race asking for $5.
Johnson's Trump had a quick reply: "In this economy, who can blame you?"
Talarico then told the audience that voters clearly want something different and noted they are worn out on cold opens about Trump. To close the sketch the two shouted the famous "Live from New York" line together.
His Senate win came against Republican Ken Paxton. Before Election Day Talarico had pushed Paxton to face him in a debate but the two candidates never met on stage.
