Detectives in California have offered a grim new theory in the death of the infant known as Baby Angelita. They now believe the baby's own mother, a 14-year-old girl, may have run her over.

What investigators laid out

At a Thursday press briefing, county and federal officials said they think the teen gave birth along a roadside strawberry field. The girl reportedly worked in those fields as a farm laborer.

Authorities believe the newborn was then struck by a car in August. Evidence found at the scene points to a sedan, they said.

Detective Richard Geng of the Monterey County Sheriff's Office described a sizable bloodstain a few feet from where the baby was found. That clue led investigators to conclude she had been moved from her birthplace to a spot beneath a vehicle that later rolled over her.

The family

Officials say the car is tied to the girl's parents. The teen is believed to have kept her pregnancy hidden from her mother.

Investigators allege the girl was a victim of incest and was impregnated by her father, Sergio Galvez Perez. They say he was not nearby on the day the baby died.

After police first spoke with the teen she was admitted to a hospital. According to officials, her father then signed her out and took her to Mexico. He was arrested this week and authorities are seeking his extradition to the US.

The girl's mother, Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was also arrested. Police suspect her of holding a fake ID. She also faces suspicion of child endangerment plus helping lead a minor astray.

Officials stressed that neither parent has been directly linked to the infant's death. It is not yet known whether the 14-year-old will be charged.
