A newly circulated phone video shows how close William Chapman got to a tiger before he was killed at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The recording appears to be his own.

Inside the pen with Altai

On Saturday Chapman filmed a handful of seconds after going past the barrier. Altai the Amur tiger is seen resting on wood while Chapman walks toward him.

Breathing on the audio is labored. Chapman does not sound alarmed even as the gap shrinks to a few feet.

Onlookers panic

People outside the fence erupt. Some scream for him to climb back out. Others shout in disbelief and one voice snaps "Seriously!"

The clip is said to have gone up on his Instagram account just before the fatal mauling.

Park response

Altai attacked Chapman inside the Doncaster enclosure. First responders arrived but could not save him.

Disturbing images of the attack also spread online. The park emptied visitors and police started an investigation.

Officials later said Altai will not be put down and that the tiger is safe and well.
