Russell Brand convicted of rape as London jury also backs three assault counts
A London jury convicted Russell Brand of one rape count and three sexual assaults. The judge denied bail and set sentencing for Monday.

Russell Brand is heading toward a prison sentence after a London jury convicted him of rape and sexual assault.
The 51-year-old actor and comedian got the verdict Thursday at Southwark Crown Court. Jurors spent two days talking it over before they came back.
The panel backed a single rape charge plus three sexual assault counts. He was cleared on two other rape counts. A judge also directed a not-guilty finding on an indecent assault charge. Prosecutors refiled that as attempted indecent assault and the jury acquitted him on that too.
Accusers and the defense
Several women who accused Brand of sexual misconduct testified during the weeks-long trial. Their accounts covered alleged attacks years apart including a claim tied to 1999.
Brand's wife Laura Brand stayed with him through the case. She described him as a devoted dad and an "amazing, attentive husband."
Remanded after the verdict
Court officers took Brand down to the cells once the verdicts were read. He answered the judge with a clear "Yes, my lord" as he was led away and showed little emotion according to reports.
Justice Bennathan told him a "significant custodial term" was coming. The judge also said a custodial sentence of some length was obvious after the findings.
Brand asked for bail. The court said no. He will stay locked up until Monday when he is due to be sentenced. Rape in the United Kingdom can carry a life term though the real range depends on the facts of each case.
