Why Quentin Tarantino says his mother will never see a penny of his fortune
A years-old story from Tarantino about a promise he made at 12 is going viral again. He says his mother mocked his writing dreams.

Quentin Tarantino is trending again over a promise he made when he was 12. The director has an estimated $150 million fortune. He says his mother will never see a penny of it.
The story comes from a 2021 interview on Brian Koppelman's podcast The Moment. It went viral again this week after Fortune revisited it.
Tarantino said his mother, Connie Zastoupil, mocked his "little 'writing career'" when he was a kid.
The vow
He said he promised himself she would get nothing from his success. "There will be no house for you," he recalled. "No Elvis Cadillac for mommy."
He said he has kept the vow with one exception. He helped her out with a problem with the IRS.
Advice for other filmmakers
Tarantino also shared money advice he once gave director Eli Roth: "don't become an employee of your house." In other words, do not let a big mortgage force you to take jobs you do not want.
Zastoupil raised him in Tennessee and California. Fortune reports she worked as a nurse.
