Somebody in New Jersey just woke up a whole lot richer. A single Powerball ticket sold in the Garden State matched every number in Wednesday night's drawing, claiming an estimated $847 million jackpot, lottery officials confirmed early Thursday.

The winning white balls were 15, 34, 41, 53 and 56. The red Powerball was 21 and the Power Play multiplier landed on 2x.

A top ten prize

The prize is now the ninth biggest in the history of the game and the second largest anyone has won so far in 2026. Officials first listed the pot at $835 million before bumping it up after final sales were counted, which moved it past the previous tenth place mark.

The lucky player now faces a big choice. Taking the lump sum would pay out about $363.1 million before taxes. The other route is an annuity that spreads the full amount across 30 payments over 29 years. Either way, federal withholding and state taxes will take a sizable bite out of the final figure.

Officials have not yet said which store sold the ticket or what town it came from. New Jersey is one of the states that allows big winners to keep their names private, so the public may never learn who holds it.

A long run ends

The jackpot had been climbing since the summer. The last time anyone hit all six numbers was August 12, when a ticket in Illinois won $1.04 billion. Nearly three months of rollovers followed as ticket sales pushed the prize higher and higher.

The odds of matching all six numbers sit at about 1 in 292.2 million. Nobody hit the $2 million or $1 million second tier prizes Wednesday, though plenty of players walked away with smaller wins.

This run also made a bit of lottery history. It was the first jackpot cycle in which players in the United Kingdom took part from start to finish after sales opened there in July. It also marked the first time a lottery outside the United States helped build a Powerball prize.

With the top prize claimed, the jackpot drops back to $20 million for Saturday night's drawing. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern time.
