Pope Leo XIV says doctors spotted a lung nodule and he will have it removed this week
Pope Leo XIV told crowds in St. Peter's Square that a small lung growth was caught early and that he will have surgery and a hospital stay this week.

Pope Leo XIV is heading into surgery. The leader of the Catholic Church says doctors found a small growth on one of his lungs.
The announcement
The 71-year-old pope broke the news on Sunday. He spoke to thousands of worshippers who had packed St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.
He explained that the nodule turned up during a recent checkup. He said his doctors told him it was found "at a very early stage" and has not spread.
Even so his medical team recommended taking it out. Leo said he will follow their guidance and have the procedure in the coming days. It has not been said whether the growth is cancer.
Recovery plans
Vatican officials say the pope should stay in the hospital for roughly a week after the operation.
His planned November visit to South America has not been called off.
Leo thanked the faithful for keeping him in their prayers.
A first for his papacy
This is the first serious health concern since Leo became pope in May 2025. He took over after the death of Pope Francis, whose last years were marked by repeated illness.
