A choice that took time
Schafer explained that she first tried to make peace with her body as it was. She said she had seen the gender-expansive side of herself as something cool and bold.
In the end she decided that medically transitioning was what she needed. She stressed that every trans person has different needs and goals.
Taking it slow
Schafer said recovery meant a lot of time lying down. Her doctors put a strict cap on how much she could walk each day.
"I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing," she said.
