Patricia Krenwinkel, a Charles Manson follower convicted in the Tate-LaBianca murders, has been recommended for parole again in California.

State corrections officials said a parole panel tentatively approved the 78-year-old's release on Tuesday. It is the third time she has been approved. Gov. Gavin Newsom overturned both earlier approvals.

What happens next

The recommendation is not final until the parole board's legal staff and then Newsom sign off. Los Angeles County prosecutors reportedly plan to urge him to keep her locked up.

She is serving her sentence at the state women's prison in Corona, east of Los Angeles. She has been behind bars for nearly 56 years, making her the longest-serving woman in the California prison system.

The convictions

A jury found her guilty in 1971 of taking part in the killings of actor Sharon Tate and four others at Tate's home, then supermarket owner Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary the following night. Newsom's choice will again put the case in the middle of California politics.
