Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each score five points as the Oilers beat the Hurricanes 6-5 in a shootout
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the only shootout goal in his season debut as Edmonton rallied to win its third straight. Seth Jarvis scored in his return.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each had two goals and three assists as the Edmonton Oilers rallied past the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 in a shootout on Thursday night at Rogers Place.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist in his season debut, then scored the only goal of the shootout. Devon Levi made 22 saves as Edmonton improved to 8-1-1 with its third straight win and its eighth in nine games.
"You have to have a little something in your head," Nugent-Hopkins said of his shootout move against right-handed goalie Brandon Bussi. "I was lucky to squeak that by him."
Jarvis returns
Carolina got a big lift of its own. Seth Jarvis scored in his first game of the season after shoulder surgery in June to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff, making it 3-2 at 12:59 of the second period. Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist. Shayne Gostisbehere and Jordan Martinook each had two assists. Bussi stopped 16 shots.
"We did a lot of good things, but you can't take that many penalties against a team like that," Jarvis said.
A wild finish
Logan Stankoven put the Hurricanes up 4-2 at 17:53 of the second. McDavid answered just 26 seconds into the third. Draisaitl then tied it on the power play at 2:51.
Then came a frantic finish. Carolina's Juuso Valimaki scored with 2:40 left for a 5-4 lead, his first goal since Dec. 10, 2024. Edmonton thought it had tied the game when Zach Hyman scored with 1:36 to go, but the goal was waved off for a high stick.
Eight seconds later, McDavid tied it 5-5 when the puck went in off the skate of Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
"If you take away the five penalties, that game was pretty good," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said.
Milestones and a scare
McDavid has 31 points, eight goals and 23 assists, during a 10-game point streak. It was the 17th five-point game of his career, moving him past Marcel Dionne, Steve Yzerman and Jari Kurri for the fourth-most in NHL history. Draisaitl has seven goals during a five-game goal streak.
Edmonton defenseman Mattias Ekholm was helped off the ice after his head hit the ice on a check by William Carrier.
Carolina, now 8-2-2, visits the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
