Carolina found another late push on Long Island.

William Carrier scored his first goal of the season at 14:52 of the third period to lift the Hurricanes to a 5-3 win against the New York Islanders on Thursday at UBS Arena.

Andrei Svechnikov and Jalen Chatfield each had a goal and an assist. Carolina improved to 13-3-2 with a fifth win in six.

Bounce in front of the net

Carrier shoveled a rebound past Semyon Varlamov after Andrei Svechnikov's initial shot. Chatfield added an empty-netter at 19:09.

"That's the way we're trying to play" Carrier said. "You got to get greedy in front of the net. That's a good time for my first goal of the season."

Islanders climb back then fall

Logan Stankoven and Jesperi Kotkaniemi staked Carolina to a 2-0 lead in the first. New York tied it twice behind Mitchell Chaffee, Brayden Schenn and Victor Eklund before Svechnikov restored the lead in the second.

Jackson Blake extended his career-high point streak to eight games. Brandon Bussi made 24 saves. Taylor Hall returned after missing nine games with upper-body injuries.
