"I cannot believe this!" Mom's upright bass surprise turned her son's half-dressed freakout into a dream school ending

Jacoby could not stop saying "I cannot believe this" when his mom surprised him with an upright bass. Four years later he plays it onstage at his dream school.

Some kids lose it over a new phone. Jacoby lost it over a giant wooden instrument leaning against the bookcase. In a home video his mom Tiffany White just shared again, the teen walks into the living room still pulling a T-shirt over his head, spots a brand-new upright bass and freezes mid-step with the shirt stuck halfway down.

What follows is pure joy on a loop. "I can't believe this," he says. Then he says it again. And again. He sits down on the couch, stands back up, puts both hands on his head, covers his mouth and circles the instrument like it might vanish. "Is this the real one?" he asks. When his mom confirms it is brand new, he thanks her over and over and makes a promise: "I'm gonna spend so much hours" on it.

White, a Florida pastor, author, writing coach and podcast host, joked in her caption that her son made a bigger fuss over the bass than he did over his car. The clip racked up more than 5.4 million views on Instagram in just two days and the funny part is only half the story.

Why the bass mattered so much

Back in 2021 Jacoby set his heart on Dreyfoos School of the Arts, the public arts high school in West Palm Beach. There was one problem. He played electric bass and the school only auditioned bass players on the upright. By spring 2022 he had fallen hard for jazz, so his mom started planning how to buy him the real thing. The surprise in the video is the day it came home.

He kept his word about the hours. Jacoby taught himself the technique from online lessons and his mom says she often woke up to find him already dressed and practicing before breakfast. She studied the same videos so she could help answer his questions. They even role-played the audition at home. When one local teacher warned that three months was probably not enough time to get ready, she kept that to herself and told her son they would do it together.

How it's going

The second half of the video jumps to October 2026. Jacoby, now a senior at Dreyfoos, stands onstage in a suit playing that same upright bass in a jazz combo with piano, trumpet, trombone, saxophone and drums. "Thank you son for keeping your promise," his mom wrote. "Keep going!"

Viewers came for the kid who could not finish putting on his shirt. They stayed for the payoff: a promise made in a living room and kept on a concert stage.
