Eight players received $23.15 million qualifying offers from their teams Monday as MLB free agency got going.

The list includes New York Yankees closer David Bednar, Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki and Seattle Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena.

The other five are Milwaukee first baseman and outfielder Jake Bauers, Baltimore left-hander Trevor Rogers, Minnesota catcher Ryan Jeffers, Pittsburgh second baseman Brandon Lowe and San Diego left-hander Adrian Morejon.

Nov. 17 deadline

Each player has until Nov. 17 to accept. A player who says yes signs a one-year deal at that price.

Most say no. Qualifying offers started after the 2012 season. Only 18 of the 157 offers made before this year were accepted.

The amount is set by the average of the top 125 major league contracts this year.

Who can get one

A team can only make the offer to a free agent who has been with the club continuously since Opening Day. The player also must never have received a qualifying offer before.

What teams get back

If a player turns down the offer and signs a major league deal with another team before the next amateur draft, his old team gets a draft pick as compensation.

That pick comes at the end of the first round or at the end of competitive balance round B. Where it lands depends on the size of the new contract. It also depends on the revenue-sharing and luxury tax status of the team losing the player.
