Lamar Jackson's return lasts one play as a thumb injury knocks him out of the Ravens' game in Buffalo
Lamar Jackson hurt his right thumb on his first play back from an ankle sprain and was ruled out against the Bills, forcing Baltimore deep into its depth chart.
Lamar Jackson's long-awaited return lasted exactly one play.
The Ravens star was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills with a right thumb injury. He got hurt on the very first snap he took.
As Jackson threw a pass, Bills outside linebacker Greg Rousseau reached up to knock the ball down and struck his right hand instead.
Straight to the tunnel
The two-time MVP looked down at his hand right away and headed to the sideline. He then walked into the tunnel with his right hand wrapped and held by a trainer.
Sunday was supposed to be a fresh start. Jackson had missed the previous three games with a high ankle sprain.
Baltimore badly needed him back. The offense had scored only five touchdowns in 14 quarters without him.
Down to the third-stringer
Things got worse in the second quarter. Backup Tyler Huntley went 2-for-4 for zero yards before he left with a right toe injury. He was listed as questionable to return.
That pushed the Ravens all the way down to No. 3 quarterback Joe Fagnano. The undrafted rookie from UConn made his first regular-season appearance after an impressive preseason.
Baltimore came into the day at 4-3 and trying to avoid a third straight loss.
