Joe Manganiello and Sofía Vergara

Joe Manganiello is telling his side of the story.

In his memoir, "Bloodlines," the actor describes a long and frightening fight with a mysterious autoimmune condition and he claims his then-wife, Sofía Vergara, offered little comfort along the way. Excerpts were published by People.

His account of the marriage

Manganiello writes that the marriage had become emotionally empty during his illness. He claims Vergara would not hug him and made fun of a puppy he had gotten during that time. He credits that dog with helping save his life during a period when he had thoughts of suicide.

Vergara has said publicly that the couple divorced because he wanted children and she did not. Manganiello writes that he had actually given up on having kids while he was sick, after the couple had looked at egg donors following unsuccessful IVF. Vergara had not responded to the excerpts as of Wednesday.

The illness

Manganiello says his health began to fail soon after their 2015 wedding, with stomach pain, ulcers, fevers and exhaustion. He had emergency surgery in 2016, lost about 60 pounds over several years and had part of his intestines removed. He says he is now symptom-free and off medication.
