Java the black Lab flunked service dog school. Now she holds a Guinness World Record for hanging laundry
Java washed out of service dog training so her trainer adopted her back. The playful black Lab just landed a Guinness World Record for clipping pegs on a line.

Plenty of dogs know how to sit and shake. Java can do the laundry. The five-year-old black Labrador is officially a Guinness World Records title holder after clipping the most clothespins onto a washing line by a dog in one minute. The record keepers shared her story on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Her final count was eight. To make each one count Java had to grab a peg, squeeze it open with her mouth, lift it to the line and let go so it snapped into place. Then she went back for another one and did it again before the clock ran out.
Java belongs to Lisa Rickards, a 46-year-old graphic designer who has had her since she was a 10-week-old puppy. Rickards first raised her as a volunteer for a service dog program. She had already raised Java's mom and grandma the same way.
Plan B worked out
Java went on to advanced training but in the end the program decided service work was not the right fit for her. Rickards got the chance to adopt her back and says that is when their real story began. With no job to train for they started learning tricks just for fun.
Java turned out to be a star student. Rickards jokes that her dog is fully caffeinated and lives up to her coffee name. She now knows more than 200 cues. She can drop coins in a piggy bank, open doors, flip light switches, unzip a jacket and even pull off her owner's socks.
Clothespins quickly became her favorite. Rickards says she sometimes leaves the room after a practice session and comes back to find Java still hanging pegs on the line by herself with her tail going a mile a minute. Her favorite part might be the big high five she gets at the end.
Spreading the joy
When she is not breaking records Java visits fire stations as a therapy dog for first responders and shows off her tricks for the crews. Rickards says Java also kept her spirits up during a rough stretch with her own health.
As a kid Rickards loved hearing her fourth grade teacher read from the Guinness book. Now her own dog is in it. She says the two of them are already dreaming up their next record.
