Stone towers and walls of a hillside fortress above the blue water of the Bosphorus with a ferry passing by in Istanbul

Every wedding photographer wants a shot that takes your breath away. One bride-to-be in Istanbul nearly got taken away along with it.

The woman was posing for pre-wedding pictures along the Bosphorus earlier this week. The strait that splits the city between Europe and Asia makes for a gorgeous backdrop. It is also famous for the strong wind that comes rolling off the water.

To finish the look she was handed a bouquet of huge beige balloons. These were not little party balloons. They were oversized and there were a lot of them. It looked lovely right up until the breeze noticed.

One gust and she was on the move

Video of the shoot shows her backpedaling as the balloons billow over her head and tug her off balance. Then a strong gust catches the whole bunch at once. Suddenly she is skidding across the waterfront toward the seawall as if the balloons are walking her like a dog.

For a moment it honestly looks like her feet might leave the ground. Her photographer instantly switches from artist to rescuer, lunging in to grab hold of her before she can slam into a nearby building.

Nobody was hurt. In fact she did not even let go. The bride-to-be steadied herself and calmly went back to finishing the shoot as if nothing had happened.

The internet thinks of one movie

Once the clip spread online the comments wrote themselves. Viewers instantly compared her to the old man in the Pixar film Up whose house floats away under a cloud of balloons. Others were just impressed by her grip. One person laughed that she would not give up those balloons for anything.

Plenty of brides have had a photo day go sideways because of rain or a surprise guest in the background. Very few can say the decorations tried to fly them across the water.

A lesson for windy shoots

If there is a takeaway for anyone planning a waterfront shoot it might be this: on a breezy day a smaller balloon bunch or a helper standing just out of frame could save a lot of drama. Wind off open water rarely sends a warning first.

This couple will not need any extra props to make their album memorable. They already have the outtake everyone wants to see.
