Homeland Security chief says the Ilhan Omar marriage probe reaches well beyond her

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin says the immigration case tied to Rep. Ilhan Omar's marriage involves several people and is now in the hands of the DOJ.

The federal investigation tied to Rep. Ilhan Omar's marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is not aimed at her alone. That is the word from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Speaking on TV on Friday, Mullin stressed that the probe reaches well beyond one person. He described it as a sizable file his department has already handed over to federal prosecutors.

He said the Justice Department is now running the investigation after agents with Homeland Security Investigations did much of the groundwork. He also rejected the idea that his department is "weaponizing" the case or engaging in "political theater." He said DHS is simply "enforcing our nation's laws."

A name crossed out twice

Mullin's comments follow a string of fresh revelations about Omar's second marriage. A copy of the couple's marriage application, said to be certified, appears to show her last name crossed out on two separate occasions.

Her marriages by the dates

Court records lay out a winding timeline. Omar was in a relationship with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi from 2002 until 2008. She wed Elmi in 2009, the two separated in 2011 and the divorce became final in 2017.

Omar reconnected with Hirsi while she was still married to Elmi. She married Hirsi in 2017 after the first divorce was done. That marriage ended in 2019.

Elmi writes that he is gay

Another twist came from Elmi himself. He called himself a gay man in a scholarly article that came out in August.

"As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral," he wrote. The paper is titled "Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya."

Elmi is a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol. The article examines attacks on LGBTQ Kenyans and how who he is colored his own research on the ground.

The claims she denies

Critics accuse Omar of marrying Elmi, who is a British citizen, so he could get immigration papers. Some go further and claim the two are brother and sister. That claim has never been proven.

One of Hirsi's friends says Hirsi once described Elmi to him as a London-based sibling of Omar. The friend said the legal marriage was set up for Elmi's papers while Omar stayed wed to Hirsi under Islamic law.

Elmi left Minnesota in 2012. An earlier probe into the marriage reportedly went nowhere because possible charges were past the statute of limitations.

Omar has denied doing anything wrong. Asked this month whether Elmi could be related to her, she said, "Not to my knowledge."
