Ilhan Omar divorce papers show her first husband never answered the case
Court papers show a judge ended Rep. Ilhan Omar's marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2017 after he never responded. A second file covers her 2019 split.

Court records from Minnesota are giving a closer look at the two marriages of Rep. Ilhan Omar that ended in divorce.
The first file covers her split from Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. A judge in Hennepin County District Court signed off on that divorce on December 4, 2017, without hearing from him at all.
A husband who could not be found
The papers list Elmi's address as unknown. The court published notice of the case three separate times during late summer 2017. When he never replied, the court moved ahead and granted Omar the divorce on its own.
The two had wed in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, in February 2009. By the time the case wrapped up they had lived apart for more than three years.
A child with another partner
One detail stands out. The filing says Omar had a daughter in June 2012 while she was still legally married to Elmi. It names Ahmed Hirsi as the girl's father.
Elmi never signed a statement saying he was not the father. A note written by hand in the file says the two had no contact before the girl was conceived.
The judge let Omar keep her Toyota Camry along with her retirement savings and personal bank accounts. Neither side has to pay spousal support.
The second divorce
A separate judgment closes out her marriage to Hirsi. It became final on November 5, 2019.
The couple agreed to share legal and physical custody of their three children, who were minors at the time. The kids were to live mostly with Omar in Washington, D.C. Hirsi got generous time with them, while Omar agreed to pay for their trips to Minnesota.
No child support or spousal support was ordered. Omar did agree to handle medical and school costs. The pair split their property without trading financial records and both gave up any future claims against the other.
A long and winding history
Omar and Hirsi first became a couple in 2002. They had two children before parting ways in 2008. She married Elmi the next year and has said the two separated in 2011.
She later got back together with Hirsi, who fathered her third child in 2012. After her divorce from Elmi was final, she legally married Hirsi in January 2018. That marriage ended less than two years later.
The marriage application
A copy of the application for her marriage to Elmi has also surfaced. According to reports, her last name was first written as Omar. It was then crossed out and replaced with Elmi before being crossed out again and switched back to Omar.
Claims she still denies
The records are getting new attention as critics accuse Omar of marrying Elmi, a British citizen, so he could gain immigration status. Some claim the two are siblings. That has never been shown to be true.
Asked this month whether Elmi is her brother, Omar said, "Not to my knowledge." She has called the claims insane and has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. In August Elmi wrote in an academic paper that he is gay.
Nothing in either divorce file shows that her first marriage was a sham or that Elmi is related to her.
