Jalen Hurts will be out for at least a month.

The Philadelphia Eagles placed their quarterback on injured reserve Saturday afternoon because of the superficial blood clot in his calf. The move means Hurts will miss at least the next four games. The decision came after the team and Hurts spent days talking with a number of doctors and experts about the best way to treat the clot.

How it got here

Hurts was cleated in the calf in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams and sought treatment on Oct. 8. Team doctors found the clot with an ultrasound on Oct. 10 after the Eagles flew to London. They decided it was safe for him to play and he went 21 of 40 for 220 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville.

Hurts practiced on Wednesday back in the United States. A follow-up ultrasound that day showed the clot had moved and the Eagles ruled him out of Sunday's home game against the Carolina Panthers.

McKee takes over

Tanner McKee will start against Carolina. He has thrown for 597 yards with five touchdowns and one interception in six career games and is 1-1 as a starter. Joe Milton III and rookie Cole Payton are behind him. Milton was signed off the Dallas practice squad on Friday.

A rough start in Philadelphia

Hurts has thrown for 933 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions this season. His 57.8 completion percentage is his lowest since his rookie year. The Eagles have lost three straight to fall to 2-3 and rank 29th in the league in scoring.

The injuries keep piling up. Saquon Barkley will miss a second straight game with a hamstring injury. DeVonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert are back after missing two games each. Right tackle Lane Johnson retired earlier this month and the team traded center Cam Jurgens to Houston a day later.

Coach Nick Sirianni has taken the Eagles to the playoffs in each of his five seasons. Keeping that run alive now falls to McKee while Hurts gets treatment.
