The Arizona Cardinals pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the NFL season on Sunday.

Chad Ryland kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired for his sixth of the day as Arizona beat the Los Angeles Rams 18-16 at SoFi Stadium. The Cardinals came in as double-digit underdogs against the team many picked to win the Super Bowl before the season.

A wild final minute

The Rams looked like they had escaped. Matthew Stafford hit Colby Parkinson for a touchdown with 47 seconds left after a replay review overturned a call that had him down at the 1. Punter Ethan Evans then kicked the go-ahead extra point in his first career placekick.

Evans was kicking because new Rams kicker Blake Grupe hurt his knee in the first quarter. Grupe made a 44-yard field goal and then had to make a tackle on the kickoff that followed.

The review also put 29 seconds back on the clock. Arizona used every one of them. Jalen Brooks made a long catch and an unnecessary roughness penalty pushed the Cardinals 36 yards into range. Three snaps later Ryland split the uprights.

LaFleur beats his old boss

It was a big day for first-year Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur. He spent the last three seasons as Sean McVay's offensive coordinator in Los Angeles and is the eighth McVay assistant to become an NFL head coach.

McVay had beaten Arizona 16 times in 19 meetings. The Cardinals (2-4) have now won twice at SoFi Stadium this season after beating the Chargers there in Week 1.

Jacoby Brissett threw for 218 yards. The real story was an Arizona defense that had been one of the worst in the league. It held a Rams offense that came in leading the NFL in total yards to 286.

Rams keep sliding

Stafford threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns, the first to Blake Corum. Los Angeles turned it over twice in Arizona territory in the fourth quarter. Cody Simon forced a Tyler Higbee fumble with 7:47 left.

The Rams were without suspended left tackle Alaric Jackson and the Cardinals went after that side of the line all day. The 38-year-old Stafford took several big hits. Puka Nacua caught six passes, three of them on the final drive.

Los Angeles is 2-4 with three losses in its last four games. The Rams visit Las Vegas next Sunday while the Cardinals host Denver.
