BYU finally has a win over Notre Dame again and it came down to the last snap.

Bear Bachmeier threw a go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:47 left Saturday night and No. 8 BYU held off No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 in Provo, Utah. It was the Cougars' first win over the Irish since 2004.

Bachmeier does it all

Bachmeier ran for two touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and threw for 224 yards. Preston Rex added 66 yards on 10 carries.

The win moved BYU to 6-0, the third straight season the Cougars have started that way.

Notre Dame rallies

BYU led by 11 at halftime. Notre Dame cut it to five going into the fourth quarter with two field goals that came after a muffed punt return and a failed fake punt by the Cougars.

Jonaz Walton then ran in from 3 yards out to put the Irish ahead with 9:31 left. Jayden Sanders intercepted Bachmeier at the Notre Dame 15 on BYU's next drive.

The winning drive and the final stand

After the BYU defense forced a three-and-out, Bachmeier led a 10-play, 55-yard drive. He found Walker Lyons for a 6-yard touchdown with 1:47 to play.

CJ Carr answered by driving Notre Dame into BYU territory. His fourth-down pass to Micah Gilbert put the Irish at the BYU 9 with four seconds left, but his last throw fell incomplete in the end zone.

"They wanted some pressure, we gave it to them," BYU coach Kalani Sitake said after the game. "And it worked out for us."

Notre Dame fell to 6-1.
