Big 12 says Notre Dame should have had one more play at the end of its 28-24 loss at BYU

The Big 12 says one second should have gone back on the clock after CJ Carr's last incompletion, which would have given Notre Dame another snap at BYU.

BYU's upset of Notre Dame ended one second too soon, the Big 12 says.

The conference said in a statement that one second should have been put back on the clock after the last play of No. 8 BYU's 28-24 win over No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday night in Provo, Utah. That would have given the Fighting Irish one more chance to win.

What went wrong

Officials ruled the game over after CJ Carr's pass to Jaden Greathouse fell incomplete in the end zone. Replays showed the ball hit the ground with one second still on the clock, which would have given Notre Dame another play on second down.

"Following the Big 12's review of the final play of Saturday's Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew," the Big 12 said. "The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week's games."

Why the Big 12 had the call

Notre Dame is an FBS independent, so its games are worked by officials from the opponent's conference. BYU plays in the Big 12.

Irish coach Marcus Freeman called the final play "chaos" after the game. He appeared to take issue with a pass interference no-call against BYU cornerback Evan Johnson but was not asked about the clock.

Not the first clock fight this season

It is the second high-profile clock ruling of the college football season. In the opener, Western Michigan appeared to beat Michigan when the clock on the NBC broadcast ran out. The Big Ten ruled the stadium clock still showed one second and Michigan won on a Hail Mary.

BYU moved to 6-0 with its first win over Notre Dame since 2004. Notre Dame fell to 6-1 on a day when five top-10 teams lost.
