One student is dead and a classmate is recovering after a gun went off inside a classroom at Atlanta Technical College on Monday.
What police say happened
According to Atlanta police, a student had a firearm that discharged by accident during class. The round struck another student in the leg.
Investigators say the student who had the gun walked out of the room afterward. He reportedly went into a restroom and was later found dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The injured student
Officers responded around 8:45 a.m. Their report says the wounded student was awake and breathing when they got there. An ambulance took that student to a hospital.
The college says the student is expected to pull through.
Campus back open
Police describe the shooting as an isolated incident and say there is no ongoing danger to the public. The school says it locked down the campus after the shooting. Classes and other operations have since resumed.
