Albert Pujols heads to Houston to interview for the Astros' manager job
Future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols will interview Thursday for the Astros' manager opening, reuniting with new GM and former Cardinals teammate Randy Flores.

Albert Pujols is getting his shot at another big league managing job.
The future Hall of Famer is on his way to Houston and will interview for the Astros' manager opening, according to sources. The in-person meeting is set for Thursday.
It is his first interview with the club. Houston is still sorting through candidates. New York Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus is also being considered.
An old teammate
Five days ago the Astros named former St. Louis Cardinals executive Randy Flores their new general manager.
Flores pitched eight years in the majors. Five of them came as Pujols' teammate in St. Louis, including the 2006 championship season.
Ready to lead
Pujols has made no secret of wanting to manage since he retired as a player in 2022.
He won a Dominican winter league title in his first season leading the Leones del Escogido in January 2025. He also managed the Dominican Republic at this year's World Baseball Classic, where his team lost to the United States in the semifinals.
In the last hiring cycle he was a finalist with the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres. Those teams went with Kurt Suzuki and Craig Stammen.
Strings attached
Pujols, 46, is still tied to the Angels through a 10-year, $10 million personal-services contract. A buyout can be worked out if Houston hires him.
He becomes eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2028 and is widely expected to get in on the first ballot.
