Aaron Boone will return as Yankees manager in 2027 for a 10th season
Boone is back for the last year of his deal after the Rays swept New York in the ALDS. The Yankees' title drought has now reached 17 seasons.

Aaron Boone is staying put in the Bronx.
Boone will return for a 10th season as manager of the New York Yankees in 2027, a source confirmed Monday. The news came more than a week after New York was knocked out of the American League Division Series for the second year in a row.
One more year on his deal
Next season is the final year of the two-year, $10.5 million extension Boone signed in February 2025. The Yankees hired him out of the broadcast booth in December 2017 to replace Joe Girardi.
Steady in the regular season
Boone's .583 winning percentage is tied for 17th in major league history. The Yankees have made the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons. They have never finished worse than two games over .500 under him, which stretched the club's MLB-record run to 34 straight winning seasons.
Falling short in October
The trouble comes after that. The Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009. That 17-season drought is the second longest in franchise history.
They reached the World Series once under Boone and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in 2024. They also fell to the Houston Astros in the ALCS in 2019 and 2022.
This fall the Tampa Bay Rays swept them. New York made three errors in the first inning of Game 2 and lost that night. Two days later the Rays finished the sweep at Yankee Stadium.
"It's the worst fricking feeling in the world," Boone said after Game 3. He said he hopes the pain "continues to fuel guys that are going through this for the first time."
