Victor Wembanyama was sick. He rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter. He still put together one of the wildest lines the NBA has seen in half a century.

The San Antonio Spurs star finished with career highs of 52 points and 24 rebounds plus eight blocks Wednesday night as the Spurs held off the Dallas Mavericks 112-111 at Frost Bank Center.

San Antonio improved to 6-2 and stretched its winning streak to six. Dallas fell to 4-4.

A first half for the record books

Wembanyama scored 10 of San Antonio's first 12 points and closed the opening half with 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. He became the first player since the play-by-play era began in 1996-97 with at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a half.

He made all 15 of his free throws before the break. That matched the most makes without a miss in a first half in that span.

In one second-quarter possession he blocked Cooper Flagg, P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford in a 13-second stretch. De'Aaron Fox grabbed the third rejection.

Clutch after the ankle scare

Wembanyama rolled his ankle stepping on Walter Clayton Jr.'s foot and left with 9:11 left. He stretched on the bench and returned with 6:05 remaining.

Dallas had erased a 19-point deficit and led 103-100 on a Washington 3 with 5:38 to go. Wembanyama answered with two putbacks in the final 2:39 and made a free throw with 24 seconds left for the final margin.

He finished 16-of-28 from the field and 19-of-23 at the line with nine offensive rebounds. Dylan Harper added 21 points. Stephon Castle had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Fox scored 10.

Kyrie Irving led Dallas with 29 points. Naji Marshall scored 22. Washington had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Flagg finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Irving missed a 15-footer with three seconds left.

Historic company

Wembanyama joined Bob McAdoo in 1974 as the only players with at least 50 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in a game since blocks became official. He also matched Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players with 50 points and 20 rebounds in a one-point win.

"He's Superman," Harper said. "I mean, he rolls his ankle and pops right up and acts like nothing happened."

"I can still do more," Wembanyama said. "My shots weren't falling tonight and that forces me into a style of play that is exhausting. I can do it, but I can be much better if my shots fall."

The Spurs host the Kings on Friday in the NBA Cup. The Mavericks host the Jazz the same night.
