Russell Westbrook is going back to Oklahoma City for good. The Thunder said Monday they will retire his No. 0 jersey on Feb. 7.

Westbrook will be just the second player to have his number hung in the rafters by the Thunder. Nick Collison's No. 4 is the other.

Westbrook announced his retirement this offseason after 18 NBA seasons. He spent the first 11 of them with the franchise.

Drafted days before the Thunder were born

The organization took Westbrook in the first round of the 2008 draft. That came just days before the team officially became the Thunder after moving from Seattle.

He and Kevin Durant turned the young team into one of the best in the league. When Durant left in free agency after the 2015-16 season, Westbrook stayed and became the face of the franchise.

A historic MVP season

The next season, Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists. He was the first player to average a triple-double for a full season since Oscar Robertson and won league MVP.

He averaged a triple-double again in each of the next two seasons. Those were his last two years in Oklahoma City.

"Many players make an impact but only great players leave a legacy. Russell Westbrook's legacy was built both on the court and in the community," Thunder general manager Sam Presti said in a statement.

"His mindset was relentless, his commitment deep. For all those reasons, Oklahomans consider him one of their own and his number will be raised to the rafters, in Oklahoma City forever," Presti said.

Life after OKC

The Thunder traded Westbrook to the Houston Rockets before the 2019-20 season. He later played for the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.

Westbrook finished his career as a nine-time All-Star. He was also named to the NBA's 75th anniversary team in 2021.
