Pete Buttigieg had a ready answer when reporters asked about Donald Trump praising Sen. Jon Husted's physique. The former transportation secretary said the president's eye for looks is a strange way to dodge real problems.

Caught on the trail

Reporters caught up with Buttigieg on Wednesday at a voter turnout event in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They asked about the president's recent remarks praising Husted's physique including his backside, hands and build.

Buttigieg called the fixation odd. He argued that obsessing over appearances is another way to skip past topics Americans actually feel every day, from gas prices to endless war.

Looks and politics

Pressed on whether looks help Husted with voters in Trump's mind, Buttigieg floated a theory about how the president chooses his circle. The talk drifted into sex appeal in politics. Buttigieg joked that he might need more gym time himself.

A Pete-on-Pete jab

The sharpest moment came when the conversation turned to Pete Hegseth's macho image. Buttigieg unloaded a pointed Pete-on-Pete critique that lit up the clip.

Election season is rarely short on punch lines and this stop was no exception.
