Three members of one family are dead in a quiet eastern Ohio village. Among them is a baby boy who was not yet two.

The victims

Investigators identified the victims as Gale Sanders (67) plus Melissa Campbell (51) along with their grandson Kozzar Lotut, who was 22 months old. The little boy had disabilities. The family lived in Gnadenhutten in Tuscarawas County.

Investigators say the grandparents often helped look after the toddler.

A call that went silent

The first sign of trouble came in a 911 call at about 4:17 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21. The caller hung up before saying anything.

Dispatchers tried calling back again and again. On one of those attempts they heard a weak voice on the other end asking for "help."

Deputies rushed to the house. A relative let them inside, where they found all three dead. A gun was lying near the bodies.

What the sheriff says

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell told a local television station the evidence is pointing toward a murder-suicide. He said that if he had to choose, the case is "definitely leaning" in that direction.

Officials have not said which of the adults is believed to have fired the gun. The investigation is ongoing.
