North Hempstead honors Italian American Heritage Month with food and music at Clinton G. Martin Park
The town's fourth annual free celebration was set for Thursday evening in New Hyde Park with Italian cuisine, cultural exhibits and a tenor in concert.

The Town of North Hempstead on Long Island marked Italian American Heritage Month with its fourth annual celebration, set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park.
What was on the menu
The evening was free and open to everyone. Guests could sample Italian cuisine and browse cultural exhibits that celebrate the history of Italian American families across Long Island. The program closed with a concert by Teo, the Romanic Tenor.
Why October
October is the month when the country honors Italian American contributions in food, music, business and public life. Towns across the region hold parades and dinners and exhibits during the month. Long Island has one of the largest Italian American populations in the nation and many local families trace their roots to Sicily, Naples and Calabria.
Keeping traditions alive
Organizers say community events like this help younger residents learn recipes and songs from their grandparents. The park on Marcus Avenue regularly hosts free town gatherings and this one is a reminder that heritage can be shared over a plate of pasta and a good song.
