One of the NHL's biggest stars wants a new home. Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade, according to multiple reports Friday night.

Kucherov told his teammates about the decision on the team plane Friday. The Lightning play in Nashville on Saturday.

The 33-year-old is in the final year of an eight-year $76 million contract that pays him $9.5 million a year. With the salary cap rising, he could be in line for more than double that on his next deal.

Contract talks stalled

The two sides were far apart in negotiations. That led to a meeting Friday where Kucherov said he wanted to play somewhere else.

He has a modified no-trade clause that lets him submit a list of 10 teams Tampa Bay can deal with. His agent Dan Milstein and general manager Julien BriseBois did not immediately comment.

A stunning turn

The news is a shock given how much Kucherov and the Lightning have won together. He has won two Stanley Cups in Tampa Bay, three Art Ross Trophies and last season's Hart Trophy as league MVP.

He recently passed longtime teammate Steven Stamkos as the franchise's all-time leading scorer. The Russian winger has spent all 14 of his NHL seasons with Tampa Bay.

The Lightning are 8-3-1 and third in the Atlantic Division. Kucherov has four goals and 15 points through 12 games.
