The Minnesota Wild say they are looking into an offensive comment that made it onto the air during Tuesday night's game against the Edmonton Oilers.

What viewers heard

Midway through the game in Edmonton the telecast hit a quiet stretch. With the scoreboard reading 3-0 a voice could be heard using the R-word to mock goaltenders.

High-pitched laughter followed right after the remark. As far as anyone can tell nobody on the broadcast acknowledged it during the game.

Who said it is still unclear

Arenas are full of microphones beyond the ones worn by announcers. That means the voice could have belonged to almost anyone near a live mic, including a fan in the stands.

The Wild's booth that night featured play-by-play voice Anthony LaPanta alongside analyst Ryan Carter. Neither man has publicly addressed the moment. LaPanta did post several times on X about the game itself.

ESPN carried the game nationally. The Wild's own broadcast crew handled the telecast in question.

The team responds

On Wednesday the Wild released a statement saying they knew about the language that aired. "The language is unacceptable and has no place on our broadcast," the team said.

The club added that its review is not finished. It also said the comment was not made by anyone on its broadcast team and that it deeply regrets what happened.
