Mike Rogers is not buying the idea that the search of Rep. Ilhan Omar's home was a political hit job.

The former Michigan congressman and Senate candidate talked about the raid Thursday. As a onetime FBI agent he said he trusts federal investigators had enough to take to a judge.

What he said about the warrant

Rogers said agents would have needed a federal judge's signature to enter the property. In his view that means they showed something compelling enough to clear that bar.

He initially framed the operation as an FBI action. Later reporting pointed to Homeland Security Investigations as the agency that carried it out. Rogers's core point did not change: it was still a federal search backed by a warrant.

The politics angle

Omar is a frequent critic of President Trump. Rogers argued the probe into her has roots that go back to the Obama years so it is unfair to cast Trump as the one driving it.

Public records do not clearly show when any federal inquiry into Omar began. Rogers spoke from his experience in the bureau and not from a released timeline.

These are political comments about an ongoing investigation. Omar has not been charged in connection with the search.
