Downtown Macon is turning into a fiesta this afternoon. The fifth Macon-Bibb Hispanic Festival runs from 1 to 7 p.m. at Cherry Street Plaza, bringing the music, flavors and traditions of Latin America to the heart of Middle Georgia.

The free, family friendly event features live bands and performers, dancing, dishes from local food trucks, vendor booths and hands on activities. Visitors can also learn about the many countries and cultures that make up the Hispanic community in the area.

Mayor Lester Miller says the festival has grown into a special tradition that brings neighbors together. He says he is thrilled to see it keep growing and to welcome families from across the county and beyond.

More than a party

This year organizers made a special push to invite nonprofits and community groups. The goal is to link families with services and help they may not know exist in their own town.

Thanks to sponsors, vendors, artisans, nonprofits and community groups could take part without paying a fee. Organizers said they wanted the day to be open and affordable for everyone, whether they come to celebrate or to share their work.

Celebrating culture

The festival was created to honor Hispanic and Latin American heritage while bringing the whole community together. It also gives Hispanic owned businesses, performers and organizations a chance to show off their products, talents and traditions to their neighbors.

The celebration grew out of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from mid September to mid October and honors Americans with roots in Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
