Luka Doncic drops 53 as the Lakers hold off the Trail Blazers 124-118 in NBA Cup play
Luka Doncic scored a season-high 53 and hit the go-ahead jumper late as the Lakers beat Portland 124-118 and pushed his average past 40.

Luka Doncic keeps doing things nobody has done in more than 60 years.
Doncic scored a season-high 53 points and hit a key jumper in the lane with 28 seconds left as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers 124-118 on Friday night at Crypto.com Arena in Emirates NBA Cup play.
The 27-year-old is now averaging a career-high 40.1 points per game. No NBA player has averaged 40 over a full season since Wilt Chamberlain in 1962-63.
A comeback built on a heave
The Lakers missed their first 15 three-point attempts and trailed by 16 in the second quarter. Doncic missed his first five threes too before banking in a shot from the opposite free throw circle at the halftime buzzer.
Los Angeles then scored 17 straight points in the third quarter. Doncic had 20 points in that period alone and the Lakers built a 16-point lead early in the fourth before Portland cut it to four.
Lakers history
It was the 11th 50-point game of Doncic's career and his fourth with the Lakers. He joined Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor and George Mikan as the only Lakers to score at least 40 points in four straight regular-season games.
"Luka can do some things that maybe a handful, if not no one, can do in basketball," Lakers coach JJ Redick said.
Austin Reaves added 25 points and Walker Kessler had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Lakers won their fourth straight and avenged an Oct. 27 home loss to Portland. Deni Avdija had 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds while Damian Lillard scored 22 for the Blazers.
"As long as we're winning, I'm good," Doncic said. "Hopefully, it continues, but you never know."
The Lakers visit Detroit on Sunday. Portland hosts San Antonio on Saturday.
