The hot stretch will not cool off.

Luka Doncic scored 40 points with nine rebounds and seven assists Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Sacramento Kings 116-103 on the road.

It was Doncic's sixth straight game with at least 35 points. He joined Kobe Bryant and Elgin Baylor as the only Lakers to do that.

Riding the wave

Doncic finished 11-of-23 from the field, 6-of-13 from 3-point range and 12-of-13 at the free-throw line in 35 minutes. He has 308 points through eight games this season, the most by any player in his first eight since Michael Jordan in 1988-89.

He also became the first player in NBA history with six straight games of 35-plus points, five-plus rebounds, five-plus assists and five-plus made 3s.

"You can call it a wave, you can call it a tsunami, you can call it whatever you want," Lakers center Walker Kessler said. "He's scoring the ball. If you want to call it a wave, we're surfing the wave a little bit."

Early separation

Doncic had 23 points by halftime, the sixth straight game he scored 20 or more before the break. In one second-quarter stretch he hit jumpers from 16, 27, 29 and 30 feet on a personal 11-2 run.

"He comes down and makes three shots in a row that there's only five guys in the NBA can make," Lakers coach JJ Redick said. "All of a sudden a tie ballgame is a nine- or 10-point lead. The team feeds off that."

Austin Reaves scored 21 points. Kessler added 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and four blocks.

Domantas Sabonis led the Kings with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Malik Monk scored 13. Sacramento fell to 1-7.

Los Angeles improved to 7-2. Redick called this "probably" the hottest stretch he can remember from Doncic, rivaling last March when Doncic averaged 37.5 points over 16 games.

"Maybe," Doncic said when asked whether he had ever been hotter. "I've had some good stretches in my career. Obviously, this could be one of the highest ones. But still some work to do."

The Lakers host the Trail Blazers on Friday in the NBA Cup. The Kings visit San Antonio the same night.
