Most NBA players grab a cup of water when they need a quick break. LeBron James grabbed a cup of red wine. It was not even his.

It happened in the third quarter of Philadelphia's 126-107 win over Chicago on Monday night, Nov. 2. Tyrese Maxey fired a long pass ahead in transition. The ball sailed just past James and his momentum carried him off the floor and right into the seats behind the basket.

Standing there was Troy Clemons, a Chestnut Hill man who was just heading back to his seat with a drink in his hand. James bumped into him, grabbed him, gave him a hug and told him "My bad." Then the four-time MVP took the cup, raised it to his lips and had a quick taste before jogging back onto the court.

His review: it was all right

Fans near the baseline cheered. Within minutes the clip was everywhere online. After the game James explained his thinking with a straight face. He said he had knocked some of the wine onto his arm in the collision so he wanted to find out whether it was any good. His verdict was that it was all right.

Clemons played it cool. At first he would not even say what was in the cup because he did not want to get the superstar in trouble. He said the superstar grabbed him and the drink went flying everywhere.

Plenty of people online begged him to save that cup forever. He did the opposite. He said that at the end of the day LeBron is a man just like him so he tossed the cup in the trash and got himself a fresh drink.

Forty years of Sixers memories

Clemons has been going to Sixers games for about four decades, all the way back to the Dr. J days at the Spectrum. He said he has never had a night like this one. He loves that this team has the city buzzing again and fans traveling in from other cities to see it.

James had plenty to smile about too. The 41-year-old finished with 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in his 24th season as the Sixers improved to 7-1. Players are not supposed to drink from a fan's cup but quick moments like this rarely draw a fine. He summed up the long season ahead by calling it a marathon. Apparently a marathon with wine stops.
