A Texas judge has ordered former NBA star J.R. Smith to keep away from a woman who says he hurt her during a violent confrontation in September.

What the order says

The emergency protective order, signed Sept. 29, forbids Smith from contacting his accuser in any way. He must stay at least 1,000 feet from where she lives and where she works.

The judge also barred him from having firearms or ammunition. The order remains in effect until Dec. 29.

The allegations

The order is tied to an alleged incident in the middle of September. Authorities accuse the 41-year-old of injuring the woman "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly."

Her name has not been released. She is described as either someone in his household or a person he was in a dating relationship with.

According to the criminal complaint, Smith struck, grabbed or shoved her with his hand.

The arrest

After a warrant was issued, a police license plate reader flagged Smith's vehicle in Royse City, Texas, on Sept. 28 and he was taken into custody. He was booked into the county jail on a single count of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence.

Smith stayed in jail overnight and was released after posting a $5,000 bond. He has not spoken publicly about the case. His attorney has said only that Smith wants to resolve the matter.
