Giants turn to J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback against the Texans
New York will start McCarthy on Sunday in Houston after his near comeback in relief of Jameis Winston against the Saints.

The New York Giants are handing the ball to J.J. McCarthy.
The Giants plan to start McCarthy at quarterback Sunday against the Houston Texans, a source said Wednesday. The move comes after he nearly led a stunning comeback in relief of Jameis Winston against the New Orleans Saints.
McCarthy came to New York in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings late last month. He took over Sunday with just under 12 minutes left in the game.
Nearly a comeback
He threw for 243 yards in that short stretch. That is the second-most passing yards in a fourth quarter by a quarterback who did not start the game in the past 25 years.
McCarthy led three scoring drives and had the Giants in the red zone before they fell short in the final seconds of a 34-27 loss.
Winston had been unbeaten in his three starts for the Giants before Sunday. He threw for 152 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions against the Saints.
What comes next
Coach John Harbaugh had declined Monday to name a starter. He said the decision would come down to what gives the Giants the best chance to move the ball, score points and protect the football.
McCarthy's mobility could open up more of the offense, including read plays and designed quarterback movement. The Giants are 3-2-1 and have a bye after Sunday's game in Houston.
