Most pumpkins sit still and wait to be picked. One pumpkin in Cary, North Carolina had other plans. A house-sized inflatable pumpkin broke loose from a farm's fall festival on Sunday and went rolling down a public road like it had somewhere better to be.

The great pumpkin escape

Phillips Farms of Cary was hosting its yearly Pumpkinfest on Oct. 11 when gusty winds grabbed the farm's giant inflatable pumpkin and sent it tumbling off the property. The orange ball bounced along the pavement while farm workers ran after it.

People in a car on the road watched it barrel straight toward them. "It's coming so fast. Oh my gosh!" one person shouted. Another summed it up even better. "Look at that. This is crazy talk."

A driver to the rescue

The driver threw the car in reverse at first. Then he did what any hero does when a giant gourd is on the loose. He pulled over and hopped out to help a farm worker wrestle the runaway pumpkin to safety as it headed for a packed parking lot.

Nobody was hurt. The pumpkin made it back home. The farm later posted a thank-you that was almost as good as the video itself. "Pumpkinfest went a little off-kilter this year, but we let it roll and had a gourdgeous Sunday," the farm wrote while thanking Uber for helping bring it home.

The internet cannot stop laughing

The clip became the most-watched post the family farm has ever shared. It passed 840,000 views in a couple of days. The comments were a pumpkin pun festival of their own.

"Charlie Brown didn't warn us about when the Great Pumpkin tries to escape," one viewer joked. Another looked at the glowing orange ball and wrote, "Wow, the Vegas sphere is beautiful this time of year." One neighbor admitted they pass the giant pumpkin every morning and could not figure out why it was suddenly somewhere else.

Fall fun, now with extra cardio

Pumpkin patches promise hayrides and corn mazes. This one threw in a chase scene for free. If you head out to a fall festival this weekend, enjoy the cider and the pumpkins. Just keep one eye on the big ones when the wind picks up.
