Diana Shnaider finally has a trophy this season. The 22-year-old beat Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

It was her first title since August 2025 and the sixth of her career. She had lost in the semifinals four times this year before this week.

Shnaider has now won six straight finals on tour. Her only loss in a final came in her first one, to Ons Jabeur in Ningbo in 2023.

A big lead slips away

The third seed looked headed for a quick win. She took the first set and raced to a 4-0 lead in the second.

Fernandez would not go away. The Canadian won seven of the next eight games to take the second set 7-5.

She kept pushing early in the third. Fernandez held serve then earned three break points on Shnaider's serve.

Shnaider takes control

Shnaider saved all three to level the set at 1-1. She broke in the fifth game then won the last three games of the match. She closed it out on her first match point after 2 hours, 18 minutes.

"It makes me even more happy that I was able to fight for the title and in the end win it," Shnaider said.

Her first move after the match was to call her mother. "I wanted to hear her voice after winning a title," she said.

It was her third win over Fernandez this year and fourth in a row against her. The title is expected to lift Shnaider back to a career-high No. 11 in the rankings.

Fernandez was playing in her second straight final after finishing runner-up to Elena Rybakina in Ningbo last week. She has lost only five of her last 21 matches.
