Commanders' Daron Payne is likely headed to injured reserve after a foot injury in practice
Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne hurt his foot in a light Friday practice. X-rays showed significant damage and his season could be over.

The Washington Commanders took another hit Friday. Defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a significant foot injury in practice that will likely land him on injured reserve, according to reports.
The injury happened during a team drill on what is usually a light practice day. Payne will have more tests Saturday, but initial X-rays showed significant damage, a team source said.
Depending on those results it is possible Payne will miss the rest of the season. He is in the final year of his contract.
Washington's longest-tenured player
Washington drafted Payne with the 13th pick in 2018. He is the team's longest-tenured position player. He started every game from 2020 through 2024, missed only two games last season and has started every game this year.
Payne made the Pro Bowl in 2022 after a career-best 11.5 sacks. His biggest strength has been stopping the run.
Earlier Friday coach Dan Quinn praised the power Payne brings inside. "Some of the dirty work doesn't go in a stat, but you can definitely feel it," Quinn said.
More trouble up front
The Commanders are 1-4-1 in a pivotal third season under Quinn. They will also be without starting defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw for Sunday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a knee injury.
Washington does have depth with Deatrich Wise Jr. and Charles Omenihu. The team also opened the 21-day practice window this week for Jer'Zhan Newton, who tore a pectoral muscle in an Aug. 14 preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. He is listed as questionable for Sunday.
